Beyoncé and JAY-Z share an immense love for their three children: Blue Ivy and twins Rumi and Sir. Their journey into parenthood began after their marriage in April 2008. Three years later, at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé hinted at their impending arrival by cradling her baby bump and teasing, “I have a surprise.” Their oldest child, daughter Blue Ivy, was born in January 2012. Reflecting on motherhood, Beyoncé expressed how giving birth made her feel more beautiful and connected than ever before. Meanwhile, JAY-Z opened up about his experience of becoming a father during an episode of LeBron James’ show, The Shop: Uninterrupted.

Beyoncé Praises Daughter Blue Ivy After She Joins Mom on Renaissance Tour: ‘I’m So Proud’

“It’s amazing. It’s a very grounding thing … I didn’t learn how to swim until Blue was born,” he said. “There goes everything you need to know. This is a metaphor for our relationship. If she ever fell in the water and I couldn’t get her, I couldn’t even fathom that thought. I gotta learn how to swim. That’s it. That was the beginning of our relationship.”

In June 2017, five years after Blue Ivy’s birth, Beyoncé and JAY-Z welcomed twins named Rumi and Sir. Despite their typically private approach to parenting, they have allowed Blue Ivy to step into the spotlight on occasions. Blue Ivy has collaborated with both of her parents on various projects, such as dancing alongside Beyoncé during her performance of “Be Alive” at the 2022 Academy Awards. Additionally, she has joined her mother onstage multiple times during Beyoncé’s ongoing Renaissance World Tour. If you’re curious to learn more about Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy, here’s everything you need to know.

She was born on Jan. 7, 2012, in New York City

Beyoncé and JAY-Z celebrated the birth of their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, on January 7, 2012, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Just two days after her arrival, TIME magazine hailed her as “the most famous baby in the world.” The couple’s celebrity friends, including Rihanna, wasted no time in offering their congratulations. Rihanna tweeted, “Welcome to the world princess Carter!”

Approximately one month after Blue’s birth, Beyoncé and JAY-Z shared the first photo of their newborn daughter along with a handwritten note expressing gratitude and asking for privacy. “We welcome you to share in our joy,” they wrote. “Thank you for respecting our privacy during this beautiful time in our lives.”

Reflecting on the experience of becoming a mother for the first time, Beyoncé spoke to Vogue in 2013, describing the presence of her family and closest friends during the birth. She expressed how their support helped alleviate her fears, making it “the best day” of her life.

She holds two Guinness World Records

When Blue Ivy was just 2 days old, JAY-Z captured her vocals and integrated them into his song “Glory.” Penned as an ode to his firstborn daughter, the track also delves into the emotional journey of a previous miscarriage experienced by his wife.

In “Glory,” JAY-Z raps poignant lines like, “False alarms and false starts / All made better by the sound of your heart / All the pain of the last time / I prayed so hard it was the last time.”

Upon its release, “Glory” made its mark on the U.S. R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, securing Blue Ivy a Guinness World Record as the youngest person to feature on a Billboard chart.

In 2021, Blue Ivy, who lent her vocals to both the opening and closing of Beyoncé’s track “Brown Skin Girl” and holds a writing credit for the song, clinched the Grammy Award for Best Music Video as a featured artist at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. This achievement marked her as the youngest individually credited winner at the Grammys, earning her a second Guinness World Record title.

“Brown Skin Girl,” which also features SAINt JHN and Wizkid, is part of the album “The Lion King: The Gift.”

Not only is she the title holder of two Guinness World Records, but Blue Ivy also made history by being both the youngest BET and youngest VMA winner for “Brown Skin Girl.”

In 2020, at 8 years old, she received the BET HER award for the song, which sings the praises of Black beauty. And in August 2021, she picked up MTV’s coveted award in the best cinematography category.

Just like her parents, every time Blue Ivy steps out, all eyes are on her. To help her look her best, the parents have enlisted Manuel Mendez — who has worked as Beyoncé’s personal assistant — to be their daughter’s personal shopper and stylist.

Mendez has been styling Blue since she was 20 months old and is credited with some of her most iconic looks, including her ensemble for JAY-Z’s “Family Feud” music video and the custom Valery Kovalska white suit she wore to the 2018 Grammys.

Mendez also lends his talent to Rumi and Sir and frequently posts looks he pulls together for the Carter children.

She gets embarrassed by her parents

Even though her parents are some of the most well-known figures in the world, Blue Ivy still gets embarrassed by them from time to time.

While sitting courtside with her dad for Game 5 of the NBA Finals in 2022, the jumbotron panned to JAY-Z, who smiled and lovingly gave his daughter a kiss on the cheek. In the now-viral video, Blue can be seen mouthing, “Dad, my hair,” as he embraced her.

She also snubbed her dad on one of the most memorable days of his life — finding out he’d be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

JAY-Z was dropping Blue off at school in 2021 when he received the news he was an inductee. Recalling the moment while appearing on HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted, the father of three said, “As she walked away I was like, ‘Yo, give me a kiss, I’m in the Hall of Fame!’ ” His daughter didn’t seem too impressed, as she replied, “Bye, Dad.”

Despite initially appearing uninterested, Blue Ivy played a part in the October 2021 induction ceremony, where her father made history as the first living solo rap artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

During a pre-recorded video segment, Blue, alongside her mother and other notable figures like Alicia Keys, DJ Khaled, and Usher, recited some of JAY-Z’s most iconic lyrics.

With a chuckle, Blue Ivy delivered lines from JAY-Z’s 1998 track “Ride or Die,” including the censored verse: “Congrats S. Carter, ghost writer / You paid the right price, so we just make your hits tighter.”

JAY-Z received his induction with accolades from former President Barack Obama and comedian Dave Chappelle.

She has several hobbies

In a birthday tribute posted on her 11th birthday, Blue’s maternal grandmother, Tina Knowles-Lawson highlighted the special bond she has with her granddaughter and gave a glimpse into Blue’s current hobbies and interests.

“You can sing dance, play basketball, play volleyball, paint, draw, sculpt, sew, write poetry, write songs, create, act, play the piano! I could go on and on,” she wrote on Instagram. “Because there’s really nothing that you can’t do.”

Knowles-Lawson continued, “You are funny and beautiful and graceful, kind, and so smart. I could not ask for a better granddaughter, Ms. Blue Ivy Carter! I could not be more blessed, grateful, and completely in love with another human. You truly bring me joy!! Grandma T.”

She narrated a New York Times bestselling book

In 2020, it was revealed that Blue Ivy would add narration to her accomplishments by lending her voice to the audiobook version of “Hair Love.” Penned by former professional football player Matthew A. Cherry, the children’s book revolves around a Black father who teams up with his young daughter to master the art of styling her hair while his wife is hospitalized.

Cherry expressed his enthusiasm for featuring a Black family at the center of the story, a representation often lacking in animation, as he explained to the Los Angeles Times.

To accompany the announcement, Cherry shared a brief snippet of Blue’s narration, where she introduced both the book and herself, set against an image of the cover.

“Dreamscape presents Hair Love, by Matthew A. Cherry,” Blue Ivy stated. “Narrated by Blue Ivy Carter.”

She is talented with makeup

It appears Blue Ivy has always had a knack for makeup — even from a young age. Her artistry skills were first on display at 4 years old when Beyoncé shared an image of Blue playing with her lip gloss and applying it neatly.

Blue’s grandmother has fostered her interest over the years, buying her numerous makeup kits, much to her dad’s dismay. “She’s quite a makeup artist. She’s amazing,” Knowles-Lawson told Entertainment Tonight. “She puts stones [on her eyes] and does all this fancy stuff. She can do a perfect cat eye. She’s a little artist.”

The proud grandma let Blue give her a makeover when she was 9 years old and posted her work on Instagram. “My talented granddaughter Blue made up my face today. She is only 9 years old can you imagine her at 15 doing my makeup? She Beat My Face ❤️Gonna save me a lot of money on make up artist fees 😂❤️, ” she captioned the post.

In May 2023, Beyoncé commenced her Renaissance World Tour, marking her return to solo touring after nearly seven years. A standout moment occurred during her Paris concert, where Beyoncé brought out a special guest for her performances of “My Power” and “My Parade” — none other than her daughter, Blue.

At just 11 years old, Blue joined her mother onstage during the dance breakdowns, showcasing her impressive choreography skills alongside Beyoncé’s backup dancers. The crowd erupted into applause as Beyoncé acknowledged her daughter, exclaiming, “Give it up for Blue.”

After the performance, Beyoncé continued to celebrate Blue’s achievement by sharing a series of images and videos of her daughter’s performance on Instagram, expressing her pride and gratitude for being Blue’s mother.

Blue made another appearance onstage during her mother’s London stop a week later, where she danced to Beyoncé’s “My Power” and also during a rendition of Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright.”

In July 2023, Blue’s grandmother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, spoke glowingly about her granddaughter’s dance prowess. Emphasizing how proud she was of Blue’s dedication and improvement, Knowles-Lawson shared that despite being just 11 years old and having only a week to prepare, Blue continued to impress with her growing talent.

She attended the London premiere of her mom’s concert film

In November 2023, Beyoncé and Blue walked the red carpet together at the London premiere of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.

Following the event, Blue’s grandmother shared a clip of the mother-daughter duo posing for photos. “This has me in tears right now,” Knowles-Lawson captioned the post on Instagram.

She collaborates with her famous parents

Blue Ivy’s burgeoning career in show business is evident from a young age, with her involvement in various projects alongside her parents. She has starred in advertisements for her mom’s IVY PARK x adidas clothing collection, made appearances in several music videos including Beyoncé’s “Spirit” and “Formation” (the latter when she was just 4 years old), and even showcased her freestyle rapping skills on bonus tracks of JAY-Z’s album 4:44.

Despite her evident talent, JAY-Z has expressed his desire not to impose the entertainment industry on any of his children. In a 2021 interview with The Sunday Times, he emphasized the importance of his children feeling loved and supported, rather than pressured to follow in his footsteps.

During the 66th annual Grammy Awards in February 2024, Blue Ivy joined her father onstage as he received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. JAY-Z lauded his daughter’s talent during his acceptance speech, humorously comparing the prestigious award to a “sippy cup” for Blue, highlighting her own achievements and burgeoning presence in the music industry.

During a father-daughter date at the 2023 Super Bowl, the preteen posed on the sidelines ahead of the game.

In the now-viral moment, JAY-Z was seen crouching down on the sidelines, taking different angles of his daughter striking a pose wearing Roc Nation attire, which provided entertainment for the halftime show.

This wasn’t the first time he showed off his photography skills. He similarly snapped a photo of his daughter and a friend jumping in the end zone at the 2022 Super Bowl.
